Ok so this isn't exactly a manga but it's definitely worth a mention!

I am so in love with Manga Traders! They have manga/manhwa scanlations, reviews and downloads all in one cozy lil place on the web. I've used their page before, but it was in its ancient days so it's not as amazing as this version.

Praises for the new Manga Traders: I love the clean layout, the ease of use, and the amount of stuff they have in there. I also particularly like the fact that it's partly user-generated: i.e. after you register, you can upload manga you already have to share with the community, and you can even edit the already-existing manga 'pages'. There's even a 'rating' system for each manga which is based on user votes to help you decide whether or not to download the story.

Such a nifty lil site. Highly recommended!

Gokusen

Gokusen is a manga like no other. And I say that because every volume strikes a deep chord in me. The storytelling is really well done.

The manga came out in 1999 and has since been turned into dorama, movie and anime, and it's inspired countless fanfics. It's a story about a female teacher (Yamaguchi Kumiko) who grew up in a Yakuza (Japanese mobster) family, and how her upbringing influences the way she handles herself and her students. A strong-willed female lead with noble (well, most of the time) intentions and never-ending optimism, she's truly an inspirational character that I look up to, as someone who will be in that profession in the (near) future. This lady may be fictional, but she kicks serious ass.

This manga has got it all - action, humor, various outlooks on societal beliefs, and even romance. After watching the dorama (there's 3 seasons, but only the first one actually attempts to follow the plot of the manga...) and the movie (featuring most of the characters from seasons 1-3), I have to say that the manga surpassed my expectations. And I hafta say, the manga tops the dorama and movie. Having said that the adaptations aren't that bad... in fact I think the dorama/movie casts really suit their roles - especially Yamaguchi Kumiko (acted by Nakama Yukie) and Sawada Shin (acted by Matsumoto Jun).

If I had to point out a 'flaw' of this manga, then I guess its art style must be the only (minor) one; it ain't exactly the prettiest manga out there (although to be fair, the mangaka does improve quite a lot as the the manga goes on)... but I think it's appropriate. It complements the 'feel' of the story, and I suppose it also supports one of the main themes of this story: "Don't judge a book by its cover".

All in all, this is truly a read-worthy story. Whether or not you enjoyed the dorama, movie or even anime, this is good stuff. I finished reading it in a day, it was so hard to put down! Hope you enjoy it as much as I do. :)

Because I'm a total ShinKumi (Sawada Shin + Yamaguchi Kumiko) supporter, I find it my duty to share with you this fanvid, based on the pages from this manga. It of course features the two characters, and be aware of spoilers if you don't wanna know more... so don't say I didn't warn ya ;P

Watched this after reading the manga and quite a few fanfics, it brought tears to my eyes.

Also, I just actually realised that in the manga (not in the dorama, sadly /:T) Shin doesn't call Kumiko 'Yankumi' like the rest of her students - he refers to her as Yamaguchi from start till practically the end. I find this so... amusing and lovely. I guess he never did see her the same way as everyone else, hey? :')

For some reason, I tend to avoid 'shounen' manga. By this, I mean stories that are typically male-dominated or -centred or -catered manga; which typically have aspects of violence, mecha stuff and where most characters are either masculine-ish/more stoic than those in shoujo manga. However this doesn't mean that I automatically rule out all mangas labelled as 'shounen'. One of such stories, and I consider it also one of my top picks would be this one.

The manga poses questions about all sorts of issues that we dont always question. The artstyle is pretty fantastic (in an action-packed kinda way) and although it can be a bit exaggerated I think it works well with the characters and plot of the stories. There is a very intense plot development of the main characters as the story goes on, and although some characters (very few tho) are more of caricatures rather than wholesome, 3-dimensional characters, it's nice to see a how much the mangaka is willing the 'share' the limelight of the people within each subplot in the volumes.

Some of the diseases are made up, and the ones that aren't can be a bit fantastical but thought-provoking nonetheless. Definitely worth a read.

Manga-based Doramas

I'm currently having a break. And due to joblessness and schoolessness (haha and linguistic prowesslessness), my attention has been pretty much on improving my Japanese listening skills. Ok, so that might be stretching it a bit (although I don't think it'd be wrong to say that it's definitely - or hopefully, rather - a side effect of what I've been up to)... I've just been watching some doramas. After scanning through my list of doramas, I realised that the ones I watch tend to be based on manga. Some of such shows are Nobuta wo Produce, Zettai Kareshi (ZK), Atashinchi no Danshi, Hanazakari no Kimitachi E (HanaKimi), One Pound Gospel, and Gokusen. Some of these manga I've read, others I've heard of (and have the reputation of having pretty strong fanbases).

There's something about manga-doramas that fascinates me... especially for shows like ZK or HanaKimi, whose mangakas are top in my list. Granted, doramas can't turn out exactly like the mangas of which they represent, it can't always be 100% similar to the manga it is trying to portray. Case in point: the ZK dorama plot was changed perhaps a bit too much for my liking. I guess it's a good thing that the last time I read the manga was more than 4 years ago, because my memory (or lack thereof) of the show would probably make me even more disappointed... so yeah, I consider ZK dorama as its own kinda-sorta story,'inspired' by the ZK manga. I considered reading ZK manga again, but I couldn't bring myself to do it because it was too good (and sad). I remember being depressed for about a week because of it. HanaKimi manga, too, had a big effect on my mood after I finished reading it. What am I trying to say here? I've completely forgotten. But anyway.

Watching the dorama version of a manga I guess might be the next 'optional' step after reading a manga. The story's value and competence at delivering the messages originally intended by the mangaka can be changed, misconstrued and conflicting with the ideas of the show's producers... but still, it's interesting to see what's the same and what's different. In other words, it's nice to know whether the 'real life' version of the manga fits with the way we picture it in our heads.

In any case, this is just me rambling about manga-related stuff, sans a proper review. Because I'm just a lazy arse that way. :T

Kimi to Scandal

This manga is the typical feel-good shoujo manga with a hefty dose of bishounen and cute moments, perfect for the days when you're ~~procrastinating from doing your work~~ bored. There's also... umm... suggested incest (although it's more like pseudo-incest), but nothing rated M or anything of the sort. The manga is pretty 'clean' and although I can't help but wonder why Shiho had such strange parents, it's pretty entertaining for a oneshot.

It would be quite hard to say the plot is original, but I think the artwork and cuteness factor really saves the manga. That, as well as the lol-wtf scenes where the lad up there (Eiji) 'can't help but' accidentally find himself looking smexy, much to the disappointment/excitement of noseblood-gushing Shiho.

In the end, you really can't help but be charmed by Eiji (and his weirdness) while empathising with Shiho. As far as shoujo oneshots go, I'd give this a readworthy stamp of approval... because I'm just that much of a sucker for cute things XD

Sahara Mizu has never disappointed my shoujo manga expectations. Her stories are always emotionally captivating; her style of drawing and storytelling always tastefully arresting. This manga is no exception: it's a brilliant oneshot about human lives linked only by bus stops. It's a 5-story anthology that made me cry, smile and chuckle. Worthy to read anytime, anywhere. If you keep up with Asian tv shows, here's a question for ya: Have you heard of a Taiwanese tv series called Devil Beside You? Well, whether or not you have, that show's based on this Japanese manga about a bad boy and a good girl with lots of interesting and emotional drama going on. To be honest, I didn't really follow the tv show, but I couldn't stop reading the manga. It's a long series (11 volumes) but it's definitely nice to read. I also like the artwork and the mangaka's sense of fashion, it's very eccentric with a subcultural youth twist to it. Or something.

Anyway, I highly recommend this, especially to shoujo fans. :)

I first read this as a real graphic novel of my friend's, but it's such a sweet little story that I bought one for myself. It's about school life, love, and Japanese archery. It's very LOL funny and the characters are nicely drawn. It's a good oneshot because it's not heavy and highly entertaining. Enjoy!

Don't let the title of this manga fool you. This is not a happily-ever-after story of a character who falls in love with someone and everything unravels (or gets complicated) from there. In fact, this manga is hardly about the conventional concept of love. The focus here is not a matter of the heart - it's a matter of the mind : escapism. The mangaka makes sure the reader experiences this, telling from his suitably grim lineart as well as his no-holds-back storytelling. The direct contrast between the typical notions of shoujo manga and the general atmosphere of the characters in this manga is appalling, but it is necessary, and even crucial, to make us connect and understand the relationship between the jaded protagonist and the world around her.

Basically put, it's a seinen (guy) manga about shoujo manga. It's definitely different from the normal shoujo, and with that, I give it a thumbs up for its originality. :)

Kon no Ki Konoha

This mangaka goes by the name Sahara Mizu @ Yumeka Sumomo. I've read 3 other of her works (Hoshi no Koe, Bus Hashiru & Nanairo Sekai), and they're just as captivating. Her stories, this one not excluding, are always touching and told in a calm but passionate tone. Her artstyle is also commendable, and very bishie material. ;)

This oneshot is different from the other stuff I've read by her because it's been injected with some fantasy/supernatural aspects. I'm not much into fantasy/supernatural, but she manages to grab my attention and emotions well, perhaps because of the way she 'tells' the story. It's heartwarming and overall, a lovely one-shot to read on a rainy day when you're just chillin' at home with a nice warm cuppa.

Detective Conan

Easily one of the best mangas i've ever read. It's got mystery, thriller, drama, and a lil bit of romance here and there. I think it's the only detective manga that I actually really like reading, as compared to Kindaichi and I can't remember the other one I once read (shows how big of an impression it had on me huh?).

There's tonnes of volumes (alright, to be fair, probably no more than a 100) and every volume is about 2.5 stories on average, meaning that each book contains about 2 full stories and one half a story. Most of the time.

Something that bothers me is the English version of the title - 'Case Closed'... I wonder why they couldn't just retain 'Detective Conan', and if anyone else is bothered by this? Hmm.

Senaka no Otoko

Another awesome manga by one of my fave mangakas, Matsumoto Tomo. The story is basically about a girl who is attracted to the back of a guy she admires, but whom she has never seen the face of.

I'm not sure if anyone notices this, but some people have really attractive backs, i.e. the whole back of the body, especially the torso. Well, this story is about this, and Matsumoto Tomo pulls off the intensity and mysteriousness of such an attraction very well.

If you want to read a good shoujo/romance manga anthology, this one fits the bill perfectly. :)

Yume Miru Happa

By the mangaka of Hanazakari no Kimitachi E (aka HanaKimi), so for those who have read that, you can easily be familiar with her artstyle and storytelling. Personally, I love it. This is a nice sweet oneshot shoujo, appropriate for whenever. It's not too light, but it's ain't too heavy either. The artwork is fine and clean, and the plot is ok too. =)

Btw, wrong name for the mangaka up there --- it's supposed to be hisaya nakajo, gomen!! I'll fix it some time. ^_^;;;

What can I say? This manga is uber kawaii!!! The artwork is pretty good and the existence of bishies = yum ;9 The plot is pretty simple, but I got a bit teary at some points. It's nice for a light read, it can make you smile =)

Midori no Hibi

Easily one of the funniest, cutest and yet heartwarming story I've ever come across. Makes me reminisce back to the days in high school with crushes & infatuations abound... ok come to think of it, mine wasn't very nice ;P Anyhow, the artwork is gorgeous, and the plot is really awesome. You'll grow to love both of the above characters quickly and though the ending is not-so-happy (for me, anyways), I enjoyed it. A good read, definitely!

I was attracted to this manga from Goldlilys' page where she featured it with a high rating as well as a positive review. It was a bit long for my liking tho, bcuz I usually prefer shorter/oneshot mangas for lighter reading - I easily get distracted, heheh. Anyhow, this story is really psychological, dark, and very deep. There's a nice quote I got from it :

"We're all looking for a peaceful and safe place... but maybe there is no such place. But we keep going no matter what's waiting for us down the road. We don't stop living."

I assure you, this is really good.

The story started out a bit strange at first but after you hold on to the plot, you really get sucked into Sawako's world. Initially I thought that she was kinda exaggerating a bit, but after rethinking about the events that happen, it's not impossible to occur, really. Bullying is underestimated and so is self-expression in the arts, in contrast with academic excellence. Anyhow, this is an entertaining read, I recommend it.

Hot guys trying to get one girl? Life is unfair isn't it ;) Lol. I've finished reading this aaaages ago (well, more like earlier this year) but most of them were scanlations. The Malay-translated manga were sold here M'sia and I've got them all, but I prefer the English translations because I feel some of the language (and scenes) were 'buried' by the censoring. Anyhow, this remains one of the most exhausting mangas I've ever read, and also one of the most entertaining. The artwork is neat & cute, and tho the storyline is pretty tangled, I had fun. =D

I was first attracted to read this because of Yazawa's stamp as the mangaka. I'm in love with Nana and Paradise Kiss was awesome. I find her artworks very charming and her character designs are gorgeous. Her storylines also tend to be darker than the usual shoujo (this manga included), which I find fascinating. It's a rather tragic story, somewhat, but it's certainly a good read. =)

Ok I gotta admit, if you read this, and you're used to reading romance shoujo, you'll most likely go "Ah, typical". But I like this manga because I am very much fascinated by the traditional Japanese culture. Aikido (J martial arts), Kyudo (J archery), Hakama (formal wear), yada3. And so, having the traditional Japanese theatre influences in this one made me love it. *swoons for guys in Japanese traditional attire*

So yeah. The story's sweet, and the plot's pretty strong. The guy is pretty cute too. ;) Heheh. I enjoyed it a lot. Recommended for all times. =)

One of my ultimate favorite mangas of all time. Seriously.

I tend to be a bit particular about the drawings of the manga I read, and I have to admit, the artwork here isn't much to be screaming about. But what the manga lacks in style of art, it definitely redeems itself by style of storytelling! The storylines are beautiful.

My favoritest is the 2nd chapter, 'Into the forest of fireflies' light', about a spirit boy and a normal schoolgirl. I can only read it once because it left such a great impact on me after the first time I read it (can't explain more because it might give away the ending ;P). Verdict : HIGHly recommended! Not just for typical romance shoujo fans.

Nousatsu Rock Star

As I've mentioned before in the previous entry (Nandemo Arisa), I find rockstars hot. Especially if they're already gorgeous and cute with a tongue stud (named 'Screw', pic above).

I really love the lineart for this one. It has a sort of edginess feel to it, but maybe that's just because of its 'rockstar' 'tude that needs to go with the plot. But whatever it is, it's a fun read. The story is sweet & the only downside is that.. I want Screw+Nobitani to myself.. T_T *sniff sniff*

Supposedly there's a sequal to this! (I just found out after digging up stuff for 'research'). Get more info on the sequel called 'Nousatsu Rock Shounen'. But honestly speaking, I think this manga can stand on its own already. So if you didn't want to download the 2nd, I think it's fine.

I must first of all admit that I like rock, and I find rockers simply sexy by just being 'rockers'. They have this attractive quality because they express their angst and frustrations thru music. A pretty... strange story. It's part sci-fi, part romance, though I'm still a wee bit confused at the end. BUT it really is touching and I did cry towards the end. And though sci-fi is not really my cup of tea, this story is still sweet.. in a kinda eccentric way I guess. ^_^;

What do I like about this manga?
1. It revolves around dancing
2. Mysterious, loner, sexy-voiced male protagonist. *swooon*
3. Ok, I must admit I find dancing guys hot XD

Ok. The sad part is, the dancing moves are not that clear, the action lines not very 'dramatic' enough. Plus, the lineart is pretty simple, if you're the type who likes the typical sweatdrop, 3-anger lines, quirky silly expressions and so on. Nothing complicated. But it's not all that bad, really. The characters are nicely drawn, and there's even a not-too-blown-up romantic 'thing' going on between the guy & girl leads. SO yeah there's romance in it. ^_^

If you want a nice, light, one-shot read, this is it.

One of the funniest manga I've ever read! Honestly. Don't be fooled by the image up there. I mean, it's romantic, yes, it's so "shoujo", yes, but it's hilarious! The mangaka, Yoshihara Yuki can draw serious emotions as well as REALLY silly ones which is really refreshing. It shows that she's fun enough and confident enough of her characters that they don't have to be 'perfect'-looking all the time.

A really entertaining read! Contains some *cough cough* 'graphic' parts, tho. But nothing major. =)

A very psychological (or is it psychopathical?) manga based on an anthology entitled Goth by a Japanese author, Otsu-ichi. The mangaka is Kendi Oiwa.

There are 5 chapters in the graphic novel, each story rather disturbing, with vivid details of cuts, wounds, cut-off limbs, etc etc. It's dark & I'd label it macabre/thriller. I find it quite interesting, tho it's a stark contrast against the usual shoujo stuff I always read (lol) but the storyline and artwork is impressive enough to get me to read till the end.

Quite a number of squirmish, distracting, morbid images, so not for the faint-hearted.

This has got to be one of the WEIRDEST manga I've ever read. When I read it, I was freaked out + confused + shocked + curious + god knows what other expression out there. It's jst so... jumbled up.

The art is pretty good and the guys are hottt, but it's ~~kinda~~ very smutty. The funny scenes are kinda cute, and you can see some elaboration of the character in Gin, but not much of the others tho. So if you're seeking relationship depth or intellectual meaningfulness or whatever, look elsewhere. If you want smut with a good dose of bishies, here ya go.

oh! and i finished reading on my birthday too (30th june)! celebrated my b'day with the ending of of the reading of hanakimi. sigh. it has a pretty sad ending, but oh well... =)

i shall write a more proper review later. (hmm? really)

next to read : ouran high school host club, onee-san no jijou, x2, and sold out.

first entries in blogs/diaries/journals are either VERY mindlessly done or very exciting.

right now, i'm all ecstatic ^___^

i've had my dose of shoujo manga for today (am downloading & reading more heheh) so i'm gonna get even worse (in condition) XD

so anyway, the point of this blog is to showcase the mangas i've read and the ones i'm planning to. ocassionally i would probably throw in some anime stuff, but since i'm more of a manga person, this page will mainly (though not totally) be about manga.

so yay!~~~ =D

as for the list of manga's i've read, it's not the entire one, just the ones that i remember having completed (ie. the ones in my computer, and some of the ones i've read in the past)

in the case of manga-styled comics by non-japanese mangakas like manhwas, i'm not too much into them although the styles are not too different (in the sense of the character designs and storyline). i prefer the characters in ~~my dreams~~ the mangas to have japanese names. how very racist of me. no no. it's not racism. i just find japanese names extremely cute and/or hot ^_^ but anyway back on the topic, yes i might include them in here as well.

there are some mangas that i've read that i don't fully remember anymore tho, and some that are in the 'uncompleted reading' pile that i have not yet even touched, but will be planning to, soon. so hmm yeah =)

lastly, i might also feature mangaka profiles or whatever the heck i feel like putting in here. this space, thus, is about whatever relating to manga that i feel deserves to be included!
